BBCAN4 - Joel Lefevre Exit Interview

May 6, 2016

Had you won the Power of Veto this week, what would you have done with it?

Joel: I would have used the Power of Veto on Tim. There would have been no other alternative but to put up the brothers. The brothers would have gone home, plus I think it would have been a good way to disguise my alliance with Cassandra which was the Beauty and the Brains Final 2.

Do you think Cassandra would have wanted you to use it on her?

Joel: I hoping that she was confident enough to know that, in that sort of situation, Tim would have definitely voted to evict the brothers as would I. She would have been safe either way.

Tim questioned your loyalty following the veto completion. Do you feel that it was due to a lack of communication amongst the alliance or was he justified in thinking that based on your actions during the competition?

Joel: I can see how from his perspective it seemed like I was not paying attention to him while he was trying to help me. At the same time, I was in a very precarious position where I felt like I everybody was looking at me and I didn’t want to show my cards one way or another. That was a mistake on my behalf that I didn’t just say screw it and start working with Tim knowing how quickly Tim was going through that popcorn pit. It is something I should have done but it was definitely also a bit of a miscommunication at certain points. In between rounds, Tim hadn’t grabbed me and had a chat and said “what are we doing, what is the game plan?”.

You talked about walking out in order to let Cassandra stay. Did you mean that or was it strategy?

Joel: In the heat of the moment, I did mean that. At the same time, it’s not something that I would have followed through on. I felt largely responsible for the way the Power of Veto shook down and the fact that one of the Threeak Show members was going to go home. I knew how much this game meant to Cassandra and I knew she really wanted to stay just as badly as I did. I felt like I didn’t want to be the one responsible for her losing her game. At the same time, I would have never actually gone through with self evicting. It was a sporadic moment of weakness where I didn’t know how to make things right and I really wanted to make things right.

When you were called out on Tuesday for things such as telling Kelsey to nominate the brothers, you denied it. Why did you decide against owning up to things in that moment?

Joel: It the heat of the moment when my name was being called out for having conflicting alliances, it was honestly just a knee jerk reaction where I felt "how do I deflect the attention off myself with this?". Obviously nobody believed me when I did deny it which was a lie. I didn’t know what to say. I felt like if I had said yes, it would have made me a bigger target even more. I think lying in that situation was my only course of action.

At the eviction, you called out Kelsey and the brothers in your speech. What was the goal of that speech?

Joel: The goal of that speech was to open people’s minds to realize that I’m not the only one who has committed these so called sins by double dealing and by not always necessarily playing with the highest honour and integrity. The fact of the matter is that everybody that is in there has had moments of deceit where they have deceived other people. I didn’t think it was fair that I was getting the brunt of the blame. I wanted to open Kelsey’s eyes once again to make her realize that the brothers had been going after her and Jared on a number of occasions in this game and that she should not forget that.

How surprised were you that Cassandra was able to go from being the target to getting the votes in her favour?

Joel: I was a little surprised when it was up against me because I was very very well liked and everybody that was left felt like there was no way that I would ever go against them. A lot of people that are left felt that I was their ride or die at one moment in the game. At the same time, Cassandra is someone who has been able to get the attention off of her and stay off the nomination block on a number of occasions. I have to give her credit. She is someone who is very crafty and knows how to weasel her way out of sticky situations.

What do you think that Cassandra’s game plan will be moving forward?

Joel: I hope her game plan is what I advised her to do which is to try to repair the damages with Tim. Fact of the matter is that if she goes with the brothers and with Kelsey, she is not finishing any better than third unless by some miracle she pulls out a couple of competition wins. If she is smart, she will go with Tim and realize that is her best path to the end.

Had you stayed, what would your game plan have been moving forward?

Joel: My game plan would have been to repair the damage with Tim. I know in the moment in that house meeting I had said I wanted to repair the damage with Nick and Phil. I needed their vote. My fate lied in their hands and I needed to sort of suck up and say that I was loyal to them. In reality, I would have tried to go back to Tim and see if I could break up that strong two which I think is going together to the end.

You downplayed your ability to win the game this week. Is there anyone that you think you could have won against in the Final 2?

Joel: I think every person that is left I could have won against. Cassandra I think I would have won against by a landslide. With Kelsey, I think I would have got all but two votes. If it was Tim, it may have been a little bit closer. With the brothers, I think I definitely could have got five votes and they could have got two or three from Jared, Raul and Kelsey.

During the double eviction, which way would you have voted if Cassandra had left the nominations the same?

Joel: At that point in the game, just for the fact that the two biggest competition threats, Nick and Phil, were still in the game, I would have kept Tim in the game strictly because Tim was the next biggest competitor in there and I couldn’t rely on myself to beat either of them in a competition. I needed the next biggest competitor in there to help me out with that.

What will you base your jury vote on?

Joel: My jury vote is going to be based on somebody who I feel played a very strong strategic game, a very strong social game and played to their strengths and their weaknesses the best but also made their own individual decisions and didn’t do what other people told them to do.
